Come with WTBE as we have a weekend (or one or both days) in Detroit.
Starting Friday night, we go to Downtown Synagogue, for services, a vegetarian meal, joining with the congregants there. Afterwards we head next door to D’Mangos SpeakEasy for drinks, grilled cheese sandwiches, live music and time to visit.
Café d’Mongo’s Speakeasy has carved a niche for itself as both a beloved downtown Detroit hotspot and — like its speakeasy name suggests — a bit of a secret. The mix of accessibility and off-the-beaten-path appeal offers an authentic experience with each drink served.
After 50 years together, D’Mongo sees the speakeasy as a combination of their personalities. The walls covered in family photographs each with their own story and artwork evoking Israel, the Purple Gang, and Jewish themes. Walking into Café d’Mongo’s is like strolling through someone else’s memory lane. It’s that inviting yet vulnerable appeal that makes Café d’Mongo’s stand out from the pack.
“The reason we opened Café d’Mongo’s back up was because this was designed to be our retirement and fun. As long as the place isn’t losing money and Larry’s having fun, then I’m happy.”
